Affected workers report interruptions in medical treatments due to unpaid social security contributions, leading to formal complaints to the Comptroller’s Office.

The conflict involves teachers and education assistants against the Municipal Corporation managed by Mayor Juan Pablo Olave, as since December 2025, deductions from their salaries for social contributions have not been transferred to the relevant institutions. This serious situation was highlighted in a council meeting in March by councilman Jorge Alfaro (FA), who, after meeting with unions and at the request of the affected teachers, filed formal complaints with the Comptroller’s Office due to the lack of responses from local authorities.

The schools affected by this administrative issue include the Bicentenario Isla de Maipo High School, Bicentenario Mario Bertero Cevasco, and República de Italia, as well as the Efraín Maldonado Torres, San Antonio de Naltagua, and Futuro Las Mercedes schools. Workers are deeply concerned, as this situation directly impacts their families and adversely affects the daily lives and well-being of the students.

The total debt was confirmed before the municipal council on May 20, highlighting the seriousness of the issue to local authorities, as the failure to meet these legal obligations has resulted in many employees having their mortgage loans suspended and being blocked from purchasing medical vouchers.

Jorge Alfaro has taken the lead in addressing this case and confirmed he has approached the Comptroller General of the Republic to demand a thorough audit to identify those responsible for this situation. The councilman explained that Law 20.742 clearly states that a mayor neglects their duties if they do not pay their employees’ contributions on time, thus he has pledged his full support to the affected staff from his position.

«To date, the social security contributions for education workers, including teachers and assistants from the municipal corporation, have not been paid,» Alfaro detailed, adding that “these are deductions made every month that have currently suspended the health coverage of the staff,” emphasizing the core of the conflict. He also clarified that the municipality no longer has funds to cover this debt, and now the corporation is seeking financial assistance from the Ministry of Education.

The local authority criticized Mayor Olave’s stance, pointing out that the administration defends itself by claiming that the criticisms it receives are merely political in nature. However, according to the councilman, the most pressing issue today is to ensure the job security of teachers and safeguard the well-being of students. Alfaro insisted that the municipality urgently needs to reorganize its budget to pay debts instead of evading responsibility for the poor decisions made.

In this way, Jorge Alfaro affirmed that «there is a sense of abandonment because there are no concrete answers regarding the solution to the problem,» and for this reason, he provides his full «support to the teachers, education assistants, and the entire educational community affected, as they are the victims of poor decisions today,» he concluded. While the teachers await a resolution to the crisis in the schools and high schools of Isla de Maipo, the Comptroller’s Office reviews the documents to determine the consequences of the unpaid contributions.
