As reported by Araucanía Noticias, the Guarantee Court in Temuco revoked the partial house arrest of Juan Pablo Leonelli, the former chief of staff of the Regional Government of Araucanía during Luciano Rivas’ administration (Chile Vamos), and mandated his return to preventive detention. This decision came in response to a request from the Prosecutor’s Office as part of investigations into the Folab, Educc, and Local Foundation, components of the so-called Case Convenios.
This ruling, issued by Judge Leticia Rivera Reyes, follows an incident in which Leonelli was involved in a traffic accident while under a restrictive liberty measure. According to details provided by Araucanía Noticias, the accident occurred at kilometer 16 on the Freire-Villarrica road, where his vehicle collided head-on with another car traveling in the opposite direction, resulting in property damage and minor injuries. Subsequently, it was confirmed that the former official was driving under the influence of alcohol.
The incident also had direct implications for the legal proceedings, as Leonelli failed to appear at a crucial hearing scheduled for the following morning in the Case Convenios investigation. Additionally, prior reports from Carabineros indicated repeated violations of the night house arrest measure imposed on him, which the Prosecutor’s Office deemed as defiance of judicial rulings.
The review hearing took place with Leonelli participating via Zoom. After considering the circumstances, the court decided to tighten the conditions and ordered his return to preventive custody, believing that his release posed a danger to public safety and the integrity of the legal process. The defendant has 24 hours to present himself to the authorities, with preliminary indications suggesting he may be admitted to the Traiguén facility, where he had previously been incarcerated.
