Using severe weather conditions as a justification, President José Antonio Kast defended the permanent evictions in high-risk campgrounds.

Amid the frontal system that is severely impacting the central-southern region of the country, the far-right leader made his stance clear: current evacuations will not be an isolated event or an emergency measure, but the beginning of a definitive plan to eradicate them.

During an official event at the San Bernardo Infantry Regiment, Kast asserted that the State cannot tolerate families settling in gullies, waterways, or other geographically vulnerable areas, warning that the government’s aim is to prevent these spaces from being occupied again once families are removed.

Kast referenced the tragedy in the Macul gully to support his position, noting that preventive monitoring allowed for the eviction of the Dignidad encampment in the La Florida commune just before the current wave of bad weather hit the region.

«This is a critical moment, where we insist that these individuals must leave the places near watercourses, and not just temporarily, but it will have to be permanent,» he stated in comments reported by El Mostrador.

Under the hypothesis that extreme weather events will recur over the coming weeks, he indicated that he will not allow these areas to be occupied again.

Kast to Employ Legal Tools for Implementing Evictions.

According to Kast, the goal will be to facilitate voluntary evictions and allow families to move with their belongings to safe locations. However, he warned that his administration will consider the use of legal tools if individuals refuse to leave the encampments to ensure that evictions can be carried out.

«To the extent of our available manpower and equipment, we will begin evicting all locations where there is a real life risk,» he emphasized.

The policy of permanent evictions will not be confined to areas affected by the severe weather. Kast indicated that the same criteria will be applied in other regions of the country where health risks exist, mentioning locations contaminated by heavy metals in the north.
