President José A. Kast confirmed on Thursday, May 14, that Bernardo Fontaine will assume the role of Chairman of the Board for Codelco, succeeding Máximo Pacheco.

Fontaine is set to take office on May 26, joined by Luz Granier and Alejandro Canut de Bon, who have been named as new board members of the state-owned mining company.

As reported earlier by El Ciudadano, Fontaine’s figure has been controversial within political and economic debates, notably due to his stance against the initial constitutional process, criticisms regarding questionable communication campaigns, and controversies surrounding his defense of the retirement system.

During the Convention, he was noted for advocating individual ownership of pension funds, actively opposing structural changes to the system. However, following some of his pro-AFP statements, various convention members—including Jaime Bassa—labeled his claims as misleading.

This cover image has cemented Fontaine’s reputation as one of the main promoters of «fake news» against the proposed new Constitution that emerged from the initial constitutional process in 2022.

Previously, in 2014, Fontaine sparked controversy by leading a communication offensive against the tax reform proposed by Michelle Bachelet’s government, financing press inserts totaling around $44 million in a campaign that claimed to gather critical opinions from various experts. However, many experts alleged they were not consulted, describing Fontaine’s efforts as «deceptive.»
