Kast Government Faces Criticism After Security Minister Fails to Attend Key Senate Session on Carabineros Modernization

Even from within the Right, criticism arose regarding the absence of Security Minister Trinidad Steinert and her deputy, Andrés Jouannet, at the Senate Finance Committee session scheduled to discuss the project aimed at modernizing the Carabineros.

The session could not proceed due to the lack of government officials, leading to dissatisfaction and scrutiny across the political spectrum, including from members of the ruling coalition, such as Senator Rodolfo Carter, who deemed the situation «unacceptable.»

“No one can be saved against their will. This is an unacceptable mistake. Our entire narrative is collapsing. It wouldn’t have cost anything to adopt a better attitude towards this,” stated Carter.

From the opposition, Senator Danissa Astudillo (PS) criticized that «the Kast government, which makes order its flag, was unable to send Minister Steinert to the Finance Committee, where the modernization of the Carabineros was being discussed, resulting in the session’s failure due to her absence.»

“Sloppiness? Inconsistency? You judge,” added the socialist parliamentarian from the Tarapacá Region.

Similarly, Gael Yeomans, a deputy from the Frente Amplio, urged the Kast government to «get to work.»

“Minister of Security Trinidad Steinert stood up the Senate Finance Committee when a project aimed at strengthening the Carabineros was about to be discussed. The emergency here seems to be non-existent; it’s all just talk. Get to work!” emphasized the legislator from District 13 (Metropolitan Region).

Meanwhile, Deputy Bernardo Salinas (PC) also regarded what occurred in the Senate as «unacceptable. When the country demands answers regarding security, the absence of Minister Steinert in a key session is not a mere anecdote; it is a signal of disconnection with real urgencies.»

“Chile needs seriousness and institutional respect,” stressed the legislator from District 5 (Coquimbo Region).

Government Acknowledges Coordination Issues

During the session, it was the Minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency, José García Ruminot, who had to «face the music» and explain the absence of the Minister and the Deputy of Security.

«Clearly, we have had a lack of coordination (…) I reiterate my apologies to the Committee and ask that we can promptly set a new session where we can ensure the Minister of Security will be present,» García stated before the dissatisfaction of the senators.
