Lafamiliateatro Celebrates Its Journey with a Repertory Cycle at Matucana 100

With over two decades of dedication, Lafamiliateatro returns to the Centro Cultural Matucana 100 with a series revisiting three of its most iconic works: Levitas, Painecur, and Mauro.

The program will take place from June 11 to June 28, showcasing a theatrical journey that has positioned the company as a leading figure in contemporary Chilean theater.

“It’s not just about reflecting on our history; it’s also about envisioning the theater that we still need to create,” states director Eduardo Luna.

This retrospective arrives at a particularly significant moment for the group, following their recent receipt of the Trajectory Fund for performing arts companies from the Ministry of Cultures, Arts, and Heritage—a recognition that highlights over 20 years of artistic creation, cultural management, and community engagement.

“This acknowledgment emphasizes our sustained efforts, creativity, and perseverance,” adds Luna, who emphasizes that this return to Matucana is about “bringing this repertoire back to the forefront, connecting it with new audiences. These three works reflect who we are profoundly. We chose them because they significantly mark our journey and continue to resonate powerfully with the current context.”

The productions included in the program tackle issues that are deeply relevant to the present.

Levitas examines the dynamics of silencing and discrimination within a Pentecostal evangelical church; Painecur revisits the historical case of ritual sacrifice that occurred at Lago Budi following the 1960 earthquake; while Mauro addresses territorial and socio-environmental struggles stemming from the development of the largest tailings dam in Latin America.

“These themes remain highly impactful in Chile today. Levitas poses questions about women, faith, silences, affections, and power structures—issues that continue to be profoundly recognizable,” comments playwright and actress Paly Pavez about the production that opens the cycle on Thursday, June 11, at the Patricio Bunster Space.

The artist also highlights that they do not aim to present a melancholic view of the company: “This isn’t experienced as a nostalgic exercise but rather as an opportunity to revisit conversations that we still need to have.”

Founded in 2004, Lafamiliateatro has maintained a consistent practice that merges stage creation, artistic mediation, cultural management, and community engagement.

Their approach combines documentary, poetic, and political narratives, constructing a dramaturgy centered on recent memory and contemporary social conflicts.

In addition to their productions, the company has initiated events such as the International Festival Made in Chile, the Performing Arts Cooperative Made in Chile, and the National Federation of Integrated Arts Cooperatives of Chile (FEDARTES), solidifying a model of collaborative and territorial work within the Chilean cultural ecosystem.

“The theater happens precisely there: in the live encounter between those of us on stage and those who come to share the experience,” concludes Paly Pavez.
