Leftist Roberto Sánchez has solidified his position in second place, bumping Rafael López Aliaga down in the race for the runoff election in Peru.

With 93.586% of the ballots processed by the National Office of Electoral Processes of Peru (ONPE), following the General Elections held from Sunday, April 12 to Monday, April 13, the candidate from Juntos por el Perú, backed by former president Pedro Castillo, has garnered 12.00% of valid votes, equivalent to 1,894,098 voters, while the far-right leader of Renovación Popular has received 11.919% with 1,880,048 votes.

Meanwhile, Keiko Fujimori from Fuerza Popular maintains her lead with 17.051%, amounting to 2,689,550 votes, ensuring her spot in the runoff scheduled for June 7, marking her fourth attempt to reach the presidency of the South American nation.

First Round Results to Be Announced by Mid-May

The final result of the elections held on April 12 and 13 will be announced by mid-May, when the National Jury of Elections (JNE) anticipates completing the ballot count. This process will confirm the candidate that will contest the runoff against Fujimori.

«We expect to have, at least, the presidential results by mid-May, which we need to determine the second round,» stated Yessica Clavijo, the JNE’s general secretary, in comments to the newspaper RPP.

According to the official, the review of questioned ballots—which contain errors or inconsistencies—needs to be completed; these ballots are not counted immediately until reviewed by the Special Electoral Jurors (JEE) across Peru.

If Roberto Sánchez’s second place is confirmed, the left and right will clash in the presidential runoff.

The 57-year-old psychologist defines himself as the «presidential candidate of the Castillo movement» and his political agenda aims to reclaim the legacy of former president Pedro Castillo, from whom he served as Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism.

Castillo governed Peru from 2021 to 2022 and was subsequently dismissed and convicted of rebellion after an alleged failed attempt to dissolve Congress.

During his electoral campaign, Sánchez has pledged to pardon the former president, reform the Constitution to «restore the government to the people»; nationalize natural resources, implement a emergency plan against hunger and poverty, promote social inclusion, and foster the endogenous development of regions.
