The justice system delivered a verdict in a case of gender violence that shocked the community of Mulchén in the Biobío Region. The Oral Criminal Court in Los Angeles convicted Cristián Alexis Morales Maureira to 15 years of effective imprisonment after finding him guilty of simple homicide against the young M.A.C.M., who was pregnant at the time of the crime.
The unanimous verdict was signed by judges Ingrid Quezada Valdebenito, Perla Roa Borgoño, and Kary Videla Beltrán, who not only imposed the deprivation of liberty but also imposed strict disqualifications on the convicted individual.
The events leading to this conviction date back to the early hours of August 3, 2022, when a group of people gathered inside a home in Mulchén. According to the prosecution and evidence presented, for «no reason whatsoever,» Morales Maureira drew a firearm from his clothing with the clear intention of threatening the victim’s life, resulting in a tragic outcome.
The brutality of the attack was evidenced in the narratives upheld by the court. The defendant, with clear homicidal intent, aimed directly at the head of the young woman and fired a shot that struck her in the left temporal region, with the projectile exiting through the right zygomatic area, causing the young woman to die instantly.
Immediately after, the murderer displayed a chilling demeanor as he handled M.A.C.M.’s body, throwing it to the ground, and later collected the used shell casing and the cell phones of witnesses to attempt to erase his criminal responsibility, forcing those present to get into his van to flee the scene.
The investigation and subsequent trial unveiled a detail that further intensifies the perception of the crime: the victim was in a state of extreme vulnerability, as the autopsy report by the Forensic Medical Service of Los Angeles revealed that she was 12 weeks pregnant at the time of her death.
The forensic medical report determined that the cause of death was due to complicated craniofacial trauma, injuries typical of a homicide by firearm, confirming that the attack was the sole reason for her death.
Beyond the prison sentence, the ruling included a series of accessory penalties. Morales Maureira is facing permanent absolute disqualification from holding public office and the deprivation of his political rights. Similarly, it was decreed that he faces absolute disqualification from practicing any titular professions for the duration of his incarceration. These measures aim to ensure that the convicted individual cannot influence public life in the country while serving his sentence.
Finally, the court ordered a procedure focusing on scientific justice and criminal identification. Once the ruling is finalized, biological samples will be taken from the defendant to determine his genetic profile. This procedure will enable his inclusion in the national DNA registry of convicted individuals, a crucial tool for investigating future crimes and strengthening the criminal justice system in Chile, ensuring he is fully identified in the state records.
