From Germany, where he is on an official visit, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva reiterated his criticism of the US blockade against Cuba, branding it as «a worldwide shame.»
The Brazilian leader addressed the topic at a press conference alongside German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, responding to a question regarding his stance in the event of a US attack and invasion of Cuba.
«I will be against the invasion of Cuba as I was against the invasion of Venezuela, as I was against the one in Ukraine, as I was against that in Gaza, and as I am against the one in Iran,» declared the President of Brazil.
He further emphasized, «I am against the disrespect for the territorial integrity of nations. I oppose any country interfering politically in how another nation should organize its society.»
«Where is the self-determination of peoples? Where is the respect for human rights? Where is adherence to the UN charter?» the leader questioned, recalling that Cuba has suffered under a blockade for more than 60 years.
«This is a worldwide shame. It is a country that has not had the opportunity, after the revolution, to decide its own fate, under the ideological blockade imposed by a powerful nation,» Lula stated, reiterating, «I am against any blockade. I stand against any intervention from any country.»
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva commenced his visit to Germany on Sunday, April 19, 2026. Among other activities, he participated in the inauguration of the Hannover Messe industrial fair and met with Chancellor Friedrich Merz to strengthen economic ties and discuss the EU-Mercosur agreement, cooperation on decarbonization, and other matters.
