Former Mayor of the Metropolitan Region of Santiago, Marcelo Trivelli, has criticized the public handling of the situation concerning Haitian children who entered Chile through family reunification processes. He emphasized that there are currently no credible reports of disappearances, suggesting that the issue is being exploited to distract from other important public agenda topics.
In an interview on the *Hora Clave* program on Radio La Clave, Trivelli stated, «Corruption may exist here, but there is no disappearance of children,» adding that the Chilean Police’s Investigations Unit has confirmed that the minors were handed over to their designated caregivers upon arrival in Chile.
«Corruption, price gouging, or administrative irregularities may be present, but not child disappearances,» he remarked.
The former mayor further asserted that the controversy has gained an intensity inconsistent with the known facts. «I see this only as a communicational intelligence operation aimed at bringing attention to other matters,» he claimed.
Trivelli pointed out that Haiti is a failed state and part of the challenges in locating some minors may be attributed to the irregular migration status of some Haitian families in the country. He noted that many individuals fear identification and potential deportation processes.
«There are Haitian individuals living irregularly in Chile who are terrified. If they brought their children back, they will not easily come forward to inquire about them,» he cautioned.
He also highlighted that representatives of the Haitian community have reported no missing children cases during this period, urging for the active involvement of migrant organizations in the search and verification processes.
These statements come amid various state investigations into the arrival of Haitian minors under family reunification programs and the potential irregularities found in those processes.
