As reported by Resumen.cl, a massive march took place this Saturday from Penco to Lirquén ahead of the impending vote on Aclara Resources’ rare earth mining project, scheduled for this Monday.
Despite a police cordon, local Mapuche groups successfully navigated the route, which included passing by the mining company’s offices, always escorted by Carabineros.
The report highlighted that the demonstration progressed towards Lirquén, where more people joined from sidewalks, with motorists honking in support.
Resumen.cl also noted that protesters and locals in Lirquén recalled the hardships they faced following the devastating forest fire catastrophe in January, emphasizing that as winter approaches, many families continue to live in precarious economic and housing conditions.
Upon reaching the Chinese district of Lirquén, an informative event was held in the plaza by the local organizations, where they emphasized the socio-environmental impacts of the mining project and its potential future expansion.
