Union leaders marked May 1 with a powerful call to halt setbacks in social and labor rights, set against a backdrop of complex economic conditions and tensions with the Executive branch.

During a renewed observance of the International Workers’ Day, the country’s major labor organizations took to the streets in various cities across Chile to voice their demands regarding wages, social security, and working conditions. This occurred in the context of rising living costs and ongoing discussions about reforms initiated by the government.

The president of the Unified Workers’ Central, David Acuña, underscored the critical nature of the moment:

“Today is not merely a commemoration; it is a day of struggle. Workers are facing a real deterioration in our living conditions while measures benefiting a select few are being discussed.”

Protests unfolded in cities such as Santiago, Valparaíso, and Concepción, where thousands marched with slogans opposing policies that, they argue, exacerbate inequality.

Criticism of Economic Reforms and Call to Strengthen Rights

One of the most frequently raised concerns by union leaders was the impact of recent economic measures. From the CUT, Acuña emphasized that “it is unacceptable that while social spending is being cut, tax benefits are promoted for high-income sectors.”

In this vein, the vice president of the multi-union organization, Karen Palma, stated:

“The country cannot continue along a path where the cost of crises is always borne by workers. We need policies that guarantee stability, dignified employment, and wages that enable a decent life.”

The demands also included the need for pension system reform, enhancing collective bargaining, and improving working conditions in precarious sectors.

An Economic Climate Straining the Labor World

This May 1 is characterized by a sustained increase in the cost of living, partly driven by rising fuel prices and inflation. This has had a direct impact on households, particularly for middle and lower-income segments.

For unions, this scenario reinforces the urgency to adopt measures that protect purchasing power. “Today, wages are insufficient, and that’s not just a perception; it’s a concrete reality faced by millions of families,” Acuña asserted.

A Commemoration with Memory and a Warning

Beyond the immediate demands, the day was also marked by the remembrance of the historical struggles of the labor movement. However, the prevailing tone was one of caution towards potential setbacks.

“Labor rights are not concessions; they are victories. When they are put at risk, workers have the obligation to defend them,” Palma stated.

In this sense, Labor Day 2026 in Chile served not only as a moment of commemoration but also as a clear political signal: the labor movement remains vigilant regarding government decisions and is ready to mobilize against any attempt to weaken social rights.
