«In a time when human rights violations in Chile and around the world are being called into question, receiving this recognition encourages us to continue working towards a future that leaves no room for repeating the atrocities of the past,» stated the Memory Museum in their social media announcement after being honored in Madrid with the X King of Spain Human Rights Prize.
This prestigious award has been presented since 2004 by the Spanish Ombudsman and the University of Alcalá, aiming to distinguish Ibero-American institutions that advocate for human rights and promote democracy.
The award was presented by King Felipe VI and accepted by María Fernanda García, the Executive Director of the Memory Museum, alongside the Chairman of the board, Patricio Zapata Larraín.
«The value of the Memory Museum and human rights does not lie in merely unearthing the shadows of the past, but in contributing to building today and tomorrow. Its significant achievement is rooted in fostering empathy,» remarked the Spanish royal representative during the ceremony.
The organization also noted that in this edition, the jury assessed 57 nominations from 14 countries, ultimately selecting the Memory Museum for its «immense commemorative activity» since its establishment in 2010, a role described as «a guarantee for strengthening democracy and human rights.»
