Mirna Schindler: Steinert’s Security Failures Reflect on Kast’s High Expectations During Campaign
In the latest episode of UChileTV’s «Descabelladas», journalist Mirna Schindler discussed the recent resignation of Trinidad Steinert from the Ministry of Security, asserting that the mistakes made by the former minister «do not fall solely on her, but also on Kast, who raised expectations during the campaign with an agenda that the government has failed to deliver on.»
According to Schindler, Steinert committed «two major sins. The first sin was asking the director of the PDI, according to all available sources, to remove the deputy director of Intelligence, Consuelo Peña, acting on a personal whim.»
«The second major sin was dismantling the Strategic Unit that was specifically created to integrate real-time information from Carabineros, PDI, the Internal Revenue Service, and Customs: eliminated without prior notice,» the journalist added.
«Now, why is it not all her fault?» Schindler questioned. «Because this government came in with such a high promise, so impossible to fulfill, claiming that now they would do things right in security matters, and all we have seen as citizens is that every day there are still murders, ongoing settling of scores, carjackings, and horrific incidents occurring.»
The journalist emphasized that organized crime «laughs at campaign slogans, like ‘they have so many days left’. That doesn’t matter to organized crime. What matters for combating organized crime are state policies, and as former Minister Luis Cordero said, state policies cannot be subjected to the whims of whichever government is in power inventing the wheel.»
«What you need to do is take the policies from the previous government, improve them if necessary, but strengthen them, not eliminate them and act like everything that was done before was wrong, because that will blow up in your face,» the journalist stressed.
