Mobilization in Mexico: Thousands March to Support Cuba, Defying Trump’s Threats

Unlike previous commemorations, where each group marched separately, on Sunday, July 26, the National Rebellion Day, thousands of citizens in the Aztec capital united in a single human tide. The message was clear and echoed continuously: «Down with the blockade, oil for Cuba!» This rallying cry resonated strongly in light of the increased economic, financial, and energy sanctions imposed by Trump’s administration, which attendees deem a prelude to possible military intervention.

The 2.6-kilometer march from the Hemicycle to Juárez to the former U.S. embassy was not just a protest; it was a showcase of political and social diversity. As participants moved through Avenida Juárez and Paseo de la Reforma, the pavement became a canvas of colors adorned with flags from Cuba, Mexico, Palestine, Venezuela, and Colombia, alongside banners from student, labor, and political organizations.

Led by the José Martí Association of Cuban Residents in Mexico, the march drew scholars, members of Morena and the Labor Party, as well as solidarity groups that saw this united call as a chance to spotlight their rejection of the economic embargo and the aggression of Washington against Havana.

«They Should Know We’ll Never Leave Cuba Alone»

Among the thousands present, notable was the presence of Guatemalan guerrilla leader César Montes, who, holding a Cuban flag, led the contingent.

The founder of the Guatemalan Rebel Armed Forces with experience in the fronts of El Salvador and Nicaragua, Montes asserted that international solidarity is the primary defense against Trump’s abuses.

«They should know we’ll never leave Cuba alone,» he declared, referencing the battles he fought against U.S. intervention.

«We fought back and defeated them in every instance,» he recalled in statements reported by the newspaper La Jornada.

The main slogans targeted both Trump and his Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, whom protesters caricatured with a Nazi shield and the nickname “Narco Turbio.”

Public outrage not only focused on the blockade but also on the bellicose rhetoric, which, according to attendees, aims to destabilize Cuba.

Historian Alberto Betancourt from UNAM warned that the democratic principles of the United States are also at risk with these policies, citing a State Department document that labels Cuba as the «capital of 21st-century populism,» a characterization that anticipates increased political and military pressure against the island.

After nearly two hours of walking, the event concluded at the former U.S. diplomatic mission with a rally full of symbolism. Tlamatini Molotla, hailing from Xochimilco, demanded the end of the «genocidal blockade» and insisted that Mexico must unconditionally support the island, recognizing the aid that the Cuban people have provided to other nations.

The commitment was not limited to words: the day ended with a call for a new mobilization on August 13, commemorating the centenary of the birth of Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro Ruz.

In this way, the popular expression of Mexico’s solidarity with the Greater Antilles not only defies Trump’s threats but also reaffirms the commitment to defending Latin American sovereignty.

The streets of the Aztec capital witnessed a message that transcends borders: Cuba is not alone, and popular unity is the best defense against imperial abuse.
