In Moscow, Russia, the international conference titled «Strengthening Ties Among BRICS Countries: Promoting Cooperation» was held under India’s presidency of the group.
The event brought together experts from Russia, India, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), South Africa, China, Iran, Brazil, and Ethiopia.
Participants analyzed the resilience of transportation and trade corridors, the security of supply chains for strategic resources, and the development of technological cooperation, including in the area of artificial intelligence (AI).
The recommendations drafted during the conference will serve as a foundation for the documents to be presented at the upcoming BRICS summit scheduled for September.
«BRICS is not just a key platform for global majorities, but also a space capable of promoting new models of international governance. Resilience and sovereignty are essential conditions for development today, while transport connectivity, supply chains, and proprietary technological ecosystems form the basis of the economic security of BRICS countries,» stated Viktoria Panova, director of the BRICS Expert Council Russia.
Meanwhile, Pavel Kniazev, the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Special Missions Ambassador and Russia’s sous-sherpa in BRICS, emphasized that the group has achieved a level of strategic partnership and significant results.
He also underscored the value of BRICS’ principles of cooperation, which, as he pointed out, benefit not just the member countries but also a wide array of states around the globe.
Nikhilesh Giri, Deputy Mission Chief at the Indian Embassy in Russia, stated that enhancing technological cooperation and ties among BRICS countries opens new opportunities for sustainable development.
Additionally, he expressed support for reforming the United Nations (UN), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the World Bank.
During the transportation session, experts from Russia, the UAE, and Egypt discussed the International North-South Transport Corridor and the Northern Sea Route as alternatives to traditional logistics chains.
«Resilient networks must be diversified, have alternative routes, digital integration, and the capacity to adapt to crises,» noted Nilanjan Ghosh, Vice President of the Observer Research Foundation (ORF).
In the resources session, representatives from India, South Africa, China, and Iran debated the development of raw material processing directly in the regions where they are extracted. Philani Mthembu, CEO of the Institute for Global Dialogue (IGD) based in Pretoria, South Africa, highlighted that cooperation within the BRICS framework helps create processing and production chains with higher added value in African countries.
During the technology and artificial intelligence session, Walter Desiderá Neto, an economic relations researcher at the Institute of Applied Economic Research (IPEA) and coordinator of the BRICS Think Tanks Council (BTTC) for Brazil, stated that a lack of IT infrastructure is one of the main obstacles to technological development and proposed boosting joint investments in supercomputers, networks, and cloud computing.
«The BRICS grouping must develop common principles and values in the field of artificial intelligence, turning digital infrastructure into a pillar not only for the economy but also for innovation,» he asserted.
Shimellis Hailu Dessie, a representative from the Institute of Foreign Affairs (IFA, Ethiopia), also advocated for the establishment of BRICS-specific technology standards.
During the discussions, participants also examined the digitization of ports and customs procedures, risk management, financing of infrastructure projects by the New Development Bank of BRICS, the green transition of the extractive sector, educational initiatives, the exchange of specialists, public diplomacy development, and the nexus between technological and energy cooperation among BRICS countries.
The conference was organized by the BRICS Expert Council Russia in collaboration with the independent Indian analysis center, Observer Research Foundation (ORF), as part of the BRICS Think Tanks Council (BTTC).
