Movilh Condemns Patricia Maldonado as a «Militant of Hate» for Ongoing Transphobia on TV+

The Homosexual Integration and Liberation Movement (Movilh) has issued a strong statement denouncing Patricia Maldonado, labeling her an «open militant of hate» due to her repeated transphobic comments during her appearances on the program “Tal Cual” on TV+.

During last Friday’s broadcast, the panelist disregarded the gender identity of Congresswoman Emilia Schneider. The organization not only criticized the TV personality but also extended its condemnation to the channel, accusing it of being a «catalyst and accomplice of prejudice and hate against transgender individuals».

According to Movilh’s statement, the backlash arose after Maldonado referred to the congresswoman Schneider in the following derogatory terms: «a fool who is a congressman, who was caught snoring, my dear, snoring. Did you see it? He’s a congressman, not a congresswoman, let that be clear.»

The statement pointed out that this is not an isolated incident but rather confirmation of a systematic attitude.

“This is the second time, in just over two months, that Maldonado has made offensive and transphobic remarks against transgender individuals on the same program, neglecting gender and identity, this time concerning a congresswoman, which makes her an open militant of hate,” said Movilh spokesperson Javiera Zúñiga.

Beyond Maldonado’s actions, Movilh directed its criticism toward the editorial responsibility of TV+, indicating that there is a troubling normalization of such abuses within the program “Tal Cual.” Additionally, they noted that no measures have been implemented to prevent further incidents, rendering the network an accomplice of prejudice.

“It is extremely concerning that, with prior evidence of discrimination, TV+ has not taken steps to prevent these types of abuses or, at the very least, help eradicate abusive misinformation and disrespect towards the reality of transgender individuals,» Zúñiga stated.

The spokesperson also highlighted the complicity of the other panel members, saying, «At no point has Maldonado’s gratuitous violence been countered by other commentators on the show, Raquel Argadoña, José Miguel Viñuela, which makes it clear that there is tacit approval from the direction of ‘Tal Cual’ and TV+ for these abuses to continue happening,” she argued.

Movilh emphasized that Congresswoman Schneider’s gender identity is female and is fully recognized under both the Gender Identity Law and the Anti-Discrimination Law, as well as being reflected in all her official documents, which Maldonado, along with TV+, neglects and distorts.

As part of its argument, Movilh referenced the spirit of Law 20.750, which regulates the introduction of digital terrestrial television and stipulates in its first article that “pluralism shall be understood as respect for social, cultural, ethnic, political, religious, gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity diversity, and it is the duty of concessionaires and permit holders of television services regulated by this law to observe these principles”.

In Movilh’s view, this legal framework seems to be of little relevance in the case of TV+, allowing the continuous transphobic comments from Patricia Maldonado on the show “Tal Cual.”

“These principles and duties, in light of what has occurred, matter little to TV+, so we urge the LGBTIQ+ community and everyone who values and respects diversity to report Maldonado and the TV+ program to the National Television Council,» the statement concluded from Movilh.
