New York Mayor Delivers on Campaign Promise with Rent Freeze for Nearly One Million Apartments
New York City Mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has successfully implemented one of his most anticipated campaign promises after the city’s Rent Regulation Council approved a freeze on rents for nearly one million rent-stabilized apartments. This measure is estimated to affect approximately 40% of the apartments across all five boroughs, as reported by Huff Post.
«This decision means that regulated lease contracts, whether one or two years long, will not see price increases, providing relief to around 2.4 million residents living in these homes in one of the world’s most expensive real estate markets,» the American media outlet noted.
This initiative stands out as one of the highlights of his campaign. Previously, in May, the mayor had introduced a plan to construct 200,000 new affordable housing units and preserve another 200,000 over the next decade, backed by a significant municipal investment of $22 billion, marking the largest allocation for housing in many years in New York, the Huff Post highlighted.
Following the vote, Mamdani declared it a «historic victory for the city’s tenants,» expressing his excitement through social media posts: in one, he is seen opening a fridge while saying, «It may be hot outside, but rents are frozen,» while in another, he shares photos with neighbors captioned: «Serving up a rent freeze.»
