American analyst criticizes the presence of extremist Zionist leaders at the parade, highlighting rising tensions following the mayor’s decision to skip a longstanding tradition.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s decision to skip the traditional Israel Day Parade has ignited significant political and media controversy across the United States. While many have focused on the absence of the city’s highest municipal authority, political analyst JoshTheProgressive noted in an Instagram post that the real issue should center around who will actually attend the event scheduled for May 31.
According to JoshTheProgressive on social media, there is an «aggressive» media coverage regarding those not attending, while scant attention is given to the presence of Israeli government officials, whom he termed as representatives of the «far-right.»
In his remarks, translated into English, he stated: “We’re talking about members of the far-right Israeli government, including extremist parliamentarians who have made some of the most dehumanizing statements about Palestinians.”
He highlighted examples such as parliamentarian Meirav Ben-Ari, attributed with the remark: «The children of Gaza brought this upon themselves.» He also mentioned Ariel Kallner, who allegedly stated: «The inhabitants of Gaza are fat and healthy. It’s all nonsense. Those who remain in the north we will truly starve to death,» adding another claimed statement from the Israeli legislator: «One goal: a Nakba that eclipses the Nakba of 1948; a Nakba in Gaza and for anyone who dares to join.»
JoshTheProgressive also questioned statements attributed to Yitzhak Kroizer, indicating that the parliamentarian had expressed, «Support for Israeli Defense Forces soldiers in any situation. Even if collateral damage includes children or women, I don’t care.» The analyst concluded that the parade “does not simply gather peaceful Israeli citizens,” but will include “violent extremists.” He praised Mamdani’s decision to avoid the event and criticized the press for failing to adequately report who will actually participate.

In addition, the digital outlet Pressenza reported that Mamdani will break a 62-year tradition by missing the so-called “Israel Day on Fifth,” arguing that the theme chosen for the 2026 parade—“Proud Americans, Proud Zionists”—shifts a community celebration into a platform of political and ideological allegiance. According to the outlet, the mayor opted to distinguish between his institutional responsibilities and support for a particular political view linked to Zionism. Pressenza also stated that Mamdani assured that his administration would ensure safety and permits necessary for the normal conduct of the event, emphasizing that his absence does not equate to a failure to protect attendees or the Jewish community in New York.
The publication further noted that the mayor reaffirmed his commitment to equality and combating hate crimes, amidst a backdrop of increasing antisemitic incidents in the city.
The article describes how his decision elicited reactions from Jewish organizations, political leaders, and Israeli diplomatic representatives, intensifying tension surrounding the parade. Pressenza argues that Mamdani’s gesture sets a relevant political precedent in a city deeply influenced by international debates on the Middle East.
According to the outlet, the controversy transcends the mayor’s attendance or absence and opens a broader discussion about the relationship between cultural identity, ideological beliefs, and the exercise of public functions in one of the world’s most diverse cities.
