Organized by various human rights groups, a large demonstration commenced around 9:00 AM this Saturday from Plaza Dignidad towards La Moneda, under the rallying cry «No to Pardons.» The protest rejects the actions of President José Antonio Kast’s government that favor impunity for human rights violators from both the dictatorship era and the social uprising.
«This is not just any march. Unfortunately, this Saturday we wish we weren’t marching to prevent the government from pardoning human rights violators. We are facing an offensive in favor of impunity, as we have mentioned many times, not only in the Senate but also on the streets since March 11th when José Antonio Kast took office,» said Senator Fabiola Campillai.
«We are joined by historical human rights organizations, as well as groups from the social uprising. This government, in addition to seeking to pardon violators of human rights from the dictatorship, also wants to do the same for those involved in the social unrest. They want us to believe that this will bring social peace, but they are very mistaken,» the senator added.
«I said it yesterday and I reiterate: social peace is not achieved by granting forgiveness to those who once killed, tortured, raped, and disappeared compatriots—our brothers, mothers, fathers, and children. That is not how peace is built,» Campillai concluded emphatically.
«We are here so that justice, which was so hard to achieve, is not erased by a mere signature,» the senator stated from the march.
