Original article: “Hagan la pega”: 52 firmas llevan a Steinert al Congreso por falta de plan contra el crimen organizado
Opposition lawmakers from the Chamber of Deputies’ Security Commission have gathered 52 signatures required to summon the Minister of Public Security, Trinidad Steinert, due to the lack of a plan from José Kast’s administration to address organized crime.
This action was announced by Deputy Jaime Araya (PPD), who criticized the far-right government for its inability to clearly articulate a concrete plan to tackle drug trafficking, homicides, extortion kidnappings, and organized crime.
«We want concrete answers: an increase in police personnel, effective deployment of the Armed Forces on routes and borders, urgent processing of the RUF (urgency requests), and real measures to curb the security crisis. Families deserve a serious plan with timelines and verifiable outcomes. Get to work,» said the lawmaker in a message shared on his social media.
The special session is expected to take place on May 12th, or on the earliest date determined by the Board, in order to demand that the Executive present a clear and concrete strategy against the advance of organized crime.
The initiative was signed by lawmakers Tatiana Urrutia (FA), Jaime Araya (PPD), Raúl Leiva (PS), Bernardo Salinas (PC), and Patricio Pinilla (DC).
«When we ask Minister Steinert and Undersecretary (Andrés Jouannet), what are the concrete measures? They are unable to provide a clear answer. What effective measures will be implemented? Where will the Armed Forces be involved?» questioned Araya.
During a press briefing, the legislator indicated that public demands suggest that the Armed Forces should be deployed alongside Carabineros on northern routes and in high-traffic areas such as bus terminals, where large crowds gather, similar to practices in many countries.
The lawmaker alleged that the government is evading the regulation of force usage rules and challenged President Kast to tell the truth to Chile.
«Will we have the Armed Forces or not? Do you fear revealing the truth about what is being planned? I believe it is outrageous what Defense Minister (Fernando Barros) has said regarding the reduction of maritime patrols due to budget constraints within the Navy. This government promised that changes in security conditions would be noticeable immediately upon taking office, and that was a lie,» he stated.
«All of Chile remembers the claims about Venezuelan criminals leaving the country once President Kast took office. More secretariat officials have left this country than foreign criminals, and that is the reality of this government,» he emphasized.
Araya insisted that when Minister Steinert comes before the Chamber, representing all political sectors, she must present a concrete plan, with clear measures that can be monitored and analyzed.
He asserted that the security of Chile is a challenge that requires collaboration from all political actors.
«As opposition, we are making it clear that since they do not want to provide specific answers, we demand they come here, sit in front of all deputies, and tell us what they will do to confront drug trafficking, to combat homicides, so that Chile does not become, as Prosecutor (Ángel) Valencia described, almost a paradise for extortion kidnappings,» he pointed out.
«This is the country that José Antonio Kast is handing over, and he is responsible for it,» he concluded.
