A coalition of opposition lawmakers introduced the «Protected Salaries» bill on Monday, aimed at ensuring workers’ salaries remain protected even when deposited into checking, savings, or sight accounts.

According to Deputy Daniela Serrano (PC), the bill’s author, «It is unacceptable that workers who have gone into debt to study now face wage garnishments due to their CAE debts, leaving them without means for their livelihood.»

The legislator explained, «Currently, Article 57 of the Labor Code states that salaries are exempt from garnishment up to 56 UF (approximately $2,281,791). Our project aims to clarify this gray area in the law, ensuring that salaries remain protected even when deposited into checking, savings, or sight accounts.»

«Salaries are meant for living, not for depleting your accounts,» added the lawmaker, pointing out that the Kast government is responsible for the Treasury Department garnishing wages from CAE debtors.
