The parliamentary groups from the Broad Front, the Socialist Party, and the Communist Party have sent a formal request to the President of the Chamber, Jorge Alessandri, urging him to convene a special session with Finance Minister Jorge Quiroz. The goal is to «analyze the guidelines» recently made public by the ministry.
These guidelines, part of the standard budget formulation process, hold significant political and social implications, as they could impact the continuation of high-value public programs, particularly those related to social protection, education, health, human rights, and other critical areas, the letter states.
«In this context,» the document further states, «it is essential for the Chamber of Deputies to be timely informed about the criteria guiding these decisions, as well as their potential effects on the citizenry.»
The request details various programs that could be affected, starting with the School Feeding Program, along with the «National Reading Plan; Health Monitoring for Healthy Children in educational establishments; dental health and preventive oral health programs; mental health programs in primary care; the National Suicide Prevention Program; the Human Rights Program; resources for supporting higher education students with disabilities; the Bicentennial High Schools of Excellence program; and the Fourth-Year Graduation Bonus, among others.»
For the opposition parties, «the potential impact on such initiatives raises legitimate concern, as these public policies directly affect the exercise of social rights and the quality of life for broad sectors of the population.»
Initially, the special session is proposed to take place on May 12, at 7:30 PM, during which the Minister of the Interior, Claudio Alvarado, will also be invited, although the final scheduling will be arranged by the Chamber’s Board.

We will continue to provide updates.
