The Iranian national team departed Mexico on Tuesday after being eliminated from the 2026 World Cup, leaving behind a farewell characterized by warmth from Mexican fans and questions about a campaign marred by visa issues and restrictions on entering the United States.
The Iranian team based itself in Tijuana, which has taken on a special significance for the delegation. Before departing, players interacted with fans who gathered outside their training center seeking autographs on albums, flags, and soccer balls.
This scene captured one of the most heartfelt moments of their departure: players responding to the affection of the crowd and local supporters bidding farewell with respect, despite the elimination.
Coach Amir Ghalenoei publicly expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and shared a phrase that encapsulates the bond formed during their stay.
«Today we leave Tijuana, but our hearts and souls remain here […] The people and country of Mexico are part of us. We are very grateful for all the hospitality and kindness you have shown us,» he stated.
He further added: «Iran and Mexico are already written in the heart of history […] we love Mexico as if it were our own nation. That is the greatest achievement we have reached,» he said.
In a public letter, the Iranian team also emphasized that Tijuana will stand as a symbol of respect, humanity, and dignity, and that Mexico will be remembered as a second home for the team.
However, the farewell was not only emotional. The Iranian federation also questioned whether all teams competed under equivalent conditions, pointing to logistical and organizational decisions that, in their view, affected fair play, especially during the final group stage matches.
Thus, Iran leaves the World Cup with a blend of gratitude and grievance: thankful for the support from Tijuana yet raising a difficult question for the tournament organizers to address.
