The Parent Center of Instituto Nacional has expressed deep concern regarding the recent remarks made by President José Antonio Kast, who highlighted students from the institution as examples of school violence.
During a press conference at La Moneda, where he addressed the attack on the Minister of Sciences at the Universidad Austral, the President stated: «Look at where they have taken emblematic educational establishments in Chile. Here we are in front of Instituto Nacional, a place where everyone was proud and said: this is our Instituto Nacional. Can anyone feel pride today when a young person leaves there and destroys everything in their path?»
«That is not a manifestation. That is violence. All Chileans must stand up against that violence,» Kast asserted, prompting an immediate reaction from the parents and guardians of Instituto Nacional, who responded publicly by stating, «Our children are not delinquents.»
«As representatives of the Parent Center of Instituto Nacional, we find it necessary to comment on the recent public statements made by the President of the Republic, which refer to our educational community in a generalized manner, based on specific events,» the statement claims.
«As a school community made up of over 3,000 students and their families, we firmly believe it is inappropriate to label or stigmatize an entire institution based on specific situations that, while they need to be addressed, do not represent the feelings or actions of the vast majority of our students,» the statement adds.
In this context, they expressed that «we are deeply concerned about the way a narrative that tends to criminalize our students has emerged. Our children are not delinquents. They are young individuals who, with effort and commitment, build their futures daily, proud to belong to Instituto Nacional and eager to become professionals who contribute to the country.»
«There are countless examples that reflect this: students who have entered higher education in recent years, young people who participate and excel in national and international academies, and a community that, despite challenges, continues to attend classes and strives to move forward,» noted the statement from Instituto Nacional’s guardians.
