The political party Juntos por el Perú, led by presidential candidate Roberto Sánchez , issued a statement accusing the polling firm IPSOS of casting doubt on the results of the runoff election held last Sunday without providing evidence.
In the text also endorsed by Obras y Ahora Nación, the political organizations expressed their «strongest rejection and concern» regarding statements made by Alfredo Torres, president of IPSOS Peru, suggesting that the projections from the quick count could shift in favor of right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori.
They indicated that such comments «diminish the credibility of the quick count of the runoff held on June 7 conducted by their own company.»
They questioned the validity of making statements without support after the quick count and sought to generate uncertainty.
«A quick count should not be subject to speculative corrections afterwards without evidence, as this generates uncertainty. We will defend the integrity of the official results above any media projection,» they asserted.
They made it clear that while the National Office of Electoral Processes of Peru (ONPE) has not completed the 100% vote count, «any other scenario constitutes an act of irresponsibility that undermines the transparency and reliability of the electoral process».
Both Juntos por el Perú and Obras y Ahora Nación pointed out that the behavior of IPSOS is concerning as they await the official results, threatening «the legitimacy of the electoral process» and relying on «corrections» that are more media-oriented than technical.
For this reason, they called on the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) and the National Jury of Elections (JNE) to take direct action against this situation.
«We urge the ONPE and JNE to investigate whether IPSOS adhered to electoral ethics and the Organic Law of Elections. We will not tolerate strange maneuvers aimed at discrediting the process prior to the official results,» they warned.
In a message shared on social media by Roberto Sánchez himself, they stated that they are currently facing «various interests that wish to call into question the integrity of the elections, both the first and second rounds, fueled by the spread of «false information».
«We call on the public and representatives to remain vigilant against any attempt at manipulation,» they concluded.
At a press conference, the spokesperson for Juntos por el Perú, Roy Mendoza, announced that the party will send a letter to the relevant electoral bodies, as well as to IPSOS.
«We are directing a letter to the JNE for them to verify if what has been mentioned meets the technical requirements. We are also writing to IPSOS and to the Ombudsman,» he indicated.
According to the 98.236% of the ballots counted by the ONPE, there is a technical tie between Sánchez and Fujimori in the runoff results.
The most recent report from the electoral body shows that the leftist candidate has 9,033,211 votes (49.998%), while the right-leaning candidate has a total of 9,034,070 (50.002%), indicating a difference of less than 1,000 votes between them.
Currently, there are still 13 ballots to be counted, while there are 1,623 pending delivery to the special electoral juries (JEE), having faced some form of appeal or observation that might even be submitted to the National Jury of Elections (JNE) for their response.
