Original article: Encuesta golpea a Trump: 53% de estadounidenses cree que hay fundamentos para un impeachment
A recent poll delivered a significant blow to Donald Trump, showing that most American citizens believe there are sufficient grounds to initiate an impeachment process against him.
The data from the public opinion survey conducted by Strength in Numbers/Verasight between June 17 and June 22 reveals a compelling picture: 53% of Americans stated that there are currently sufficient grounds to remove the right-wing president, while only 39% disagreed, and 8% were undecided.
This figure reflects a majority support for the possibility of impeachment or a censure motion. In the United States, this process does not function as a straightforward removal; rather, it initiates a formal accusation against a high-ranking official like the president.
The House of Representatives presents the charges for impeachment, and the Senate conducts a trial to determine if the president is guilty of treason, bribery, or other serious crimes. If convicted by a two-thirds majority in the Senate, the defendant is removed from office and disqualified from future positions.
According to Truthout, among the reasons cited by respondents for justifying the removal of the Republican mogul, there is a statistical tie between two main categories: 30% mentioned «corruption/self-enrichment» Trump may have engaged in during his time in office, while another 30% pointed to «abuse of power/challenging the courts.» An additional 20% attributed their stance to the president’s decision to initiate an illegal war in Iran and/or alleged war crimes, while 16% based their opinion on how the president managed files related to the sexual offender Jeffrey Epstein.
It is important to note that this survey did not inquire about general support for impeachment but specifically about the existence of grounds for it. This methodological distinction is significant when contrasted with a previous survey from the same firm conducted in April, where 55% of respondents directly supported Trump’s removal without linking the question to concrete reasons, compared to 37% who opposed. Among independent voters, support for impeachment reached almost two to one, with 50% backing the idea and only 28% rejecting it.
However, as noted by Truthout, the political landscape is paradoxical – despite the poll results, Congressional Democrats have chosen not to incorporate impeachment into their political messaging in the lead-up to this year’s midterm elections.
According to the cited media outlet, at the beginning of June, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries stated that Democrats «haven’t ruled anything out» regarding impeachment, but clarified that the party is not considering this option «at this time.»
Back in April, Jeffries described the idea of removing Trump as a potentially counterproductive and fruitless endeavor. Party insiders warn that a failed impeachment attempt risks being perceived as a tacit approval of the president’s conduct, while also distracting from the party’s core economic message regarding affordability and healthcare, issues leaders believe resonate more with voters.
Nonetheless, columnist Heather Digby Parton from Salon suggested a contrary view: not pursuing impeachment could likewise be interpreted as a «tacit endorsement» of Trump’s actions, especially considering many view him as the most corrupt president in history.
The lingering question in the political atmosphere is whether the Democratic Party will yield to the pressure from its voters or maintain its strategy of restraint, amidst a troubled president whose actions in office, according to most Americans, merit formal investigation.
