The Chilean President, José A. Kast, delivered an unusual argument against the current Wetlands Law, asserting that it «could hinder productive activities» in the country.
Kast made these remarks during a citizen meeting called «President Present» in Coyhaique, where he was joined by Transportation Minister Louis de Grange, Public Works Minister Martín Arrau, and Economy Minister Daniel Mas.
According to various national media reports, the topic of the Wetlands Law was discussed in light of the controversy raised by the Housing Minister in Valdivia. Kast initiated the conversation with, «Why not analyze the law and see if it will hinder development everywhere or not?»
He added, «As I mentioned yesterday, an irrigation pond could end up being declared a wetland. A farmer in the Atacama region builds a pond, water arrives, and then a colony of pirigüines or little frogs settles there. The farmer created the pond, the colony of pirigüines came, and now we have to protect the lives of those pirigüines in that pond. It wasn’t a wetland.»
Kast continued, stating, «My father had a field in Puerto Varas. The entire field could be declared a wetland because it’s all wet.»
Is this ignorance or an attempt to mock environmental policies? This isn’t the first time Kast has shown a lack of understanding of the water cycle.
In the weeks leading up to the 2021 presidential runoff, he promised on a television program that his government would not allow water from rivers to flow into the sea.
«When we go south and see rivers dumping water into the sea, that is a serious issue today. We will not be losing water that goes to the sea,» Kast stated at that time. Read the full report below:
