President Sheinbaum Affirms Mexico’s Support for Michelle Bachelet’s Candidacy as UN Secretary-General

Claudia Sheinbaum, the President of Mexico, announced that the country continues to back Michelle Bachelet’s candidacy for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations. This declaration comes in response to a recent informal survey conducted within the UN Security Council, which indicated a disadvantage for the former Chilean president compared to other candidates.

«We believe she is a woman who embodies a vision for building peace, defending human rights, and upholding the principles of the UN Charter, as she has demonstrated throughout her life, and who seeks multilateralism,» Sheinbaum stated on Tuesday, August 25.

She further expressed, «We need to assess her possibilities (…) At the United Nations, we stand as equals. It represents the equality among nations, among states. And she embodies that integrity.» Bachelet’s candidacy is officially supported by both Mexico and Brazil.
