Two former Carabineros from Ovalle are now in preventive detention after being formally charged in a bribery investigation. They are accused of demanding money from a Bolivian driver who lacked a professional license to operate a bus.
According to regional prosecutor Rodrigo Gómez, the investigative details were developed in conjunction with Carabineros. He stated that «the now former officials drove the suspect in a police vehicle to two ATMs (one at a service station and another at a bus terminal in the area) and later took him to the police station.»
«The investigation indicates that on July 7 at approximately 10:00 PM, the accused, who were still serving as Carabineros at that time, flagged down a Bolivian citizen who was driving a bus that had suffered a mechanical failure at the intersection of Ariztía Poniente and Circunvalación in Ovalle,» the prosecutor detailed.
«According to the formal charges, and which is still under investigation, when they requested the mentioned citizen’s documents, he stated that he did not possess the professional license required to drive the vehicle. The officers allegedly informed him that he would need to be detained, but to avoid that, they suggested he pay a sum of 200,000 pesos as a ‘bail’ to be released,» added the regional prosecutor.
Since he did not have the amount, the Bolivian citizen reportedly asked a friend for money, who facilitated the sum of 198,000 pesos through a third-party transfer at 10:30 that evening.
«It is also being investigated that to obtain the money, the accused transported the Bolivian citizen in the police vehicle first to the ATM located at the service station on Avenida Circunvalación Norte at the corner of Ariztía in Ovalle, where he was unable to withdraw the cash. Consequently, they transported him to the bus terminal in Ovalle, at Ariztía Oriente, so he could attempt to withdraw the funds from the ATM located there, but he was again unsuccessful. He was then taken back to the police station,» prosecutor Rodrigo Gómez noted.
A 60-day timeframe has been established to conclude the investigation. Meanwhile, the Bolivian driver has also faced charges for driving without a license.
