The Valparaíso Prosecutor’s Office has announced the date for the formal charges against two former officials of Conaf, accused of their alleged role in the deaths of 138 individuals during the massive wildfire that occurred in the municipalities of Viña del Mar and Quilpué on February 2, 2024.
The hearing is scheduled for Monday, July 27, starting at 9:00 AM at the Valparaíso Guarantee Court, where Juan Atienza and Luis Correa will appear as defendants facing charges of manslaughter.
At the time of the incident, Atienza was the head of the Wildfire Protection Department of Conaf Valparaíso, while Correa served as the brigade leader and Incident Commander.
Prosecutor Claudio Rebeco, head of the Regional Anti-Corruption Unit of the Valparaíso Prosecutor’s Office, stated to Radio ADN that «the evidence gathered suggests that these officials had information about the direction of the fire but failed to activate the evacuation alert system in a timely manner.»
«Despite having sufficient information regarding the fire’s advancement, they did not promptly activate the evacuation alert system,» Rebeco added.
More updates will follow.
