Original article: Por fraude al fisco, lavado de activos y delitos tributarios: Ministerio Público pidió 28 años de cárcel para exalcalde de Vitacura Raúl Torrealba
The Public Prosecutor’s Office is requesting a 28-year prison sentence for Raúl Torrealba (77 years old), the former mayor of Vitacura and a longstanding leader of the National Renewal party. He faces charges for tax crimes, fraud against the treasury, and money laundering, allegedly committed during his time in office.
In their presentation, the North Central Prosecutor’s Office accused Torrealba of committing no less than 29 counts of repeated fraud against the treasury, for which they are seeking a 12-year sentence.
Additionally, they are requesting 6 years for repeated willful misstatement of taxes; 6 years for money laundering; and 4 years for improper tax refund claims.
Moreover, according to a report by Mega, the prosecution has also called for the seizure of all of Torrealba’s assets, including a property in Cunco valued at $185 million, along with several million pesos in cash that was hidden in his home.
According to the prosecutor’s office, Torrealba allegedly collaborated with a criminal organization composed of Renato Sepúlveda, Antonia Larraín, Augusto Silva, Arnaldo Cañas, and Domingo Prieto—already convicted—between 2011 and 2021 to defraud and misappropriate municipal funds, acquiring over $760 million through these means.
Currently, Torrealba is subject to a partial house arrest measure, and the investigation against him was closed on June 5, leaving only the preparation for trial.
Various national media reports indicate that both the prosecutor’s office and the State Defense Council are open to a plea deal where the former mayor would admit to his corrupt actions, return the defrauded funds, and serve part of the sentence in prison.
