The public’s confidence in the leadership of Argentina’s President Javier Milei has seen its most dramatic decline this year, plunging 12.1% in April compared to March, according to the latest report from the Torcuato Di Tella University.

This drop has brought the Government Confidence Index (ICG) down to 2.02 on a scale from 0 to 5, marking not only the most significant fall of 2026 but also extending a downward trend for four consecutive months, amid escalating social unrest and a continued deterioration in perceptions of the president’s administration and his austerity policies referred to as «La motosierra» (The Chainsaw).

The study indicates that the April decline reinforces a trend that began in January, when the index fell by 2.8%, followed by a 0.6% decrease in February and a 3.5% drop in March. Cumulatively, this contraction amounts to 17.9% since the end of 2025, while the year-over-year comparison shows a 13.2% decrease compared to April of the previous year.

The report emphasizes that “all components of the index experienced declines in April, reaching their lowest values of 2026,” as noted by El Destape.

This scenario reflects a widespread erosion in perceptions of the far-right government, whose policies have reversed progress on social claims and sparked an economic crisis that has affected the finances of Argentine families.

Among the most impacted factors, the “efficiency” indicator suffered a collapse of 21.4%, followed by the “overall government evaluation” with a decline of 17.2%. Other key areas also saw significant drops: “concern for the common good” fell by 13.9%, “honesty” decreased by 8.4%, and “capability” was reduced by 2%.

According to the public opinion study, the overall average rating of the “libertarian” administration has thus dropped to 2.42 points, marking the lowest level since December 2023 when Milei took office. Consequently, it appears that “La motosierra,” emblematic of his austerity policies, is dimming amid rising public distrust.
