Puente Alto Mayor Matías Toledo issued a strong rebuke this Friday, April 10, against the presidential delegate for the Metropolitan Region, Germán Codina (pictured), criticizing the almost nonexistent police presence safeguarding safety and street commerce in the community.

Through his social media channels, the mayor expressed his frustration over this situation, reporting that municipal inspectors faced various aggressive acts, including being attacked with boiling oil and chlorine, leaving several officials injured.

«Today, along with the Public Safety team, we were implementing various order control measures in the district, working in Sotero del Río and also at the Puente Alto plaza, where our inspectors were first attacked with hot oil, then with chlorine, and later in the afternoon in the plaza suffered other types of injuries. We have inspectors injured,» the mayor recounted in a video shared on his Instagram account.

Mayor Toledo further remarked that «I find it very concerning that today the metropolitan presidential delegate is absent when he is responsible for security, having also served as mayor of this community for 12 years. He was the one who issued 365 temporary permits, and today, when these permits are no longer in place and we need to carry out this daily work and fight, we lack institutional support.»

«Where are the government authorities, and the delegate? (…) There’s chaos in central Puente Alto, and there is no police on the street,» the municipal authority questioned, adding that «I am tired of our officials doing all the work he could not accomplish in 12 years, and now as presidential delegate, he is not on the ground.»

Moreover, Toledo deemed it «disrespectful that tomorrow the Security Minister and a number of others come to stroll around when they have not been capable of sitting down with the mayor of Puente Alto, and today we have to fight in the street to contain public order, which is their responsibility. They are truly disastrous,» he asserted.

«Public order and safety fall under the Ministry of Security and the presidential delegation, while we as the Puente Alto municipality have increased from 4 to 41 vans in a year. What has the ministry done? How many more police officers have been added to Puente Alto’s force? How many more vehicles do we have for the community? They have done nothing,» Toledo criticized.

Finally, the mayor warned that «crime has increased, and still, we have to take care of everything that is their responsibility. I am genuinely upset today because I feel they have been disastrous, full of empty promises. I am tired of seeing my staff assaulted every day because you do not do your job.»

«We feel neglected; it is exhausting to endure insults and organized attacks daily, all to maintain an order in a community where our families can walk peacefully, where commerce can be established correctly, and we can reclaim our community,» concluded Mayor Matías Toledo.
