Original article: La provincia de Qinghai se convierte en el gran campo de pruebas de la energía limpia del país
Qinghai Province plays a pivotal role in China’s quest to develop high-tech green energy solutions while striving for carbon neutrality. This wind-swept region features an expansive solar park that astonishes visitors with its size.
Located in China’s Gobi Desert, the Talatan Solar Park harnesses millions of solar panels to generate vast amounts of energy to meet the country’s growing energy demands.
“Qinghai has abundant land and plenty of sunlight. This provides unique resources for clean energy development,” said An Fengjun from the Green Energy Park Management Committee.
Recently, China announced plans to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
Green energy is leading the charge, with the Talatan Solar Park playing a crucial role in meeting these ambitious goals.
The energy produced here is transmitted nationwide through ultra-high voltage lines that minimize power loss during distribution.
This service area is particularly unique, as it generates all the energy it requires to operate, without producing any harmful emissions.
“Since our carbon-zero service area began operations last year, many visitors from various sectors have come to see it,” said Lian Wei, Deputy General Manager of Qinghai Green Industry.
Back at the vast solar field, millions of panels are having an unexpected impact on the Gobi Desert.
“Once the panels were cleaned, rainwater led to the gradual recovery of vegetation in the area. The decrease in wind has reduced sandstorms, allowing vegetation to naturally rebound,” explained An Fengjun.
However, with the increase in vegetation comes the risk of wildfires.
“Once the grass grew, the greatest hidden danger appeared at the end of winter: fire prevention in the grasslands. We allowed grazing in this photovoltaic ecological pasture, which benefited the local economy and reduced the risk of grass fires,” An Fengjun added.
Sheep herders have been part of this landscape for generations. This represents what is known in China as a win-win situation. The sheep roam freely, filling their bellies while solar energy flows into the grid.
