In a post on social media platform X, former prosecutor Carlos Gajardo highlighted a significant yet overlooked event in the news: within just one week, 10 members of the Chilean Carabineros were detained and charged with various offenses.
Gajardo first referred to incidents in the Atacama Region, where 8 officers were arrested and accused of obstructing an investigation, executing illegal searches, and forging public documents.
In this case, the Copiapó Guarantee Court ordered the imprisonment of 7 officers, while one was placed under house arrest and national rooting measures. The crimes allegedly occurred in 2025, when these officers were part of the «Centauro» section within the Atacama Prefecture.
This adds to the situation in Valdivia, where 2 officers were detained and charged for being part of a network involved in the illegal seafood trade.
According to national media reports, this criminal group was engaged in stealing, transporting, and hoarding these products, as well as forging public documents and money laundering. A report from La Tercera suggests that these illicit operations generated nearly 9 billion pesos in illegal proceeds.
«Preventing corruption in the Carabineros should be the top priority for Minister Arrau,» commented former prosecutor Carlos Gajardo succinctly.
