An extraordinary statement was made by Republican Congresswoman Chiara Barchiesi during a press briefing at Congress, asserting that the government’s budget cuts to the Ministry of Health «may affect hospitals, but do not impact any patients.»
«That’s what is important,» the legislator confidently stated, adding that the reduction of resources «will not affect any surgeries, medical personnel, surgical supplies, or medications. It will not impact the sick or those on waiting lists.»
According to Barchiesi, the cuts are necessary due to «significant inefficiencies in the health system, similar to many sectors with public officials, characterized by absenteeism. The costs associated with medical leaves (…) have taken resources away from the sick.»
Furthermore, the Republican parliamentarian continued, «we have a tremendous disorder concerning overtime. Therefore, the Minister of Health aims to make resource use more efficient so that they genuinely reach the sick, rather than disappearing due to inefficiencies caused by appointing people who lack administrative expertise, leading to situations like at Van Buren Hospital in Valparaíso where women have given birth without anesthesia,» Barchiesi insisted.
