Original article: «Condicionar la interrupción del embarazo a escuchar un latido es macabro»: Bancada PC e Independientes rechazó proyecto presentado por republicanos y libertarios
Deputy Marcos Barraza, deputy leader of the Communist Party and Independents, criticized the «Listen to Your Heart» bill presented by members of the Republican, National Libertarian, and RN parties, stating that «requiring women to listen to a heartbeat before proceeding with an abortion is morbid.»
«A woman who has experienced rape, fetal unviability, or life-threatening conditions due to a pregnancy is going through an intensely psychological and emotional ordeal. Therefore, forcing her to listen to a heartbeat before being allowed to terminate the pregnancy is cruel and serves only to instill guilt,» maintained the PC legislator.
According to Barraza, this far-right initiative represents «a threat to a woman’s mental stability, in situations where the State should be offering protection during such experiences.»
«That’s why we reject this bill; it is maliciously intended and aims solely to generate guilt in women who are already facing high vulnerability,» emphasized Deputy Barraza.
As reported by El Ciudadano, the «Listen to Your Heart» bill has sparked a wave of rejection and criticism from various political sectors, feminist organizations, and health specialists.
The proposal requires doctors to offer women the opportunity to listen to the embryo or fetus’s heartbeat before performing an abortion under the three legal grounds and stipulates that the physician must refuse to carry out the procedure if the patient does not agree to this condition.
Specifically, the bill modifies Article 119 of the Health Code concerning the informed consent procedure physicians must follow before carrying out an abortion.
According to the text -driven by deputies Cristóbal Urruticoechea (National Libertarian Party), Chiara Barchiesi (Republican Party), Catalina Del Real (Republican Party), Álvaro Jofré (National Libertarian Party), Ximena Ossandón (National Renewal), and Claudia Reyes (Republican Party)- the presence of cardiac activity «constitutes an objective and verifiable clinical fact» which, according to the bill’s premise, «strengthens the quality of the informed consent of the woman requesting the abortion.»
