Roberto Sánchez, candidate of Juntos por el Peru, has emerged as the likely winner of the presidential runoff elections in the South American nation, held this Sunday, according to a quick count conducted by Ipsos.

According to the opinion poll commissioned by the Civil Association Transparency, in collaboration with NDI Universo/Cobertura, the leftist presidential hopeful holds 50.3% of the votes, while the right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori, of Fuerza Popular, has reportedly secured 49.7%.

The quick count is a statistical tool that estimates electoral outcomes based on a representative sample of polling places located in different parts of the country. In Peru, it is primarily conducted by specialized firms and electoral observation organizations after the polls have closed and counting has been completed at selected tables.

This methodology allows for a highly accurate identification of voting trends as well as an early projection of the winners of the elections. In this case, it involves a sample of 1,327 ballots, including properly marked votes while excluding null and blank ones. The margin of error is +/- 1.9% for both candidates.

The official results of the presidential election will be announced by the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE).

Peru held one of the most contested presidential elections this Sunday, with over 27.3 million citizens called to the polls to decide not only who will serve as president for the 2026-2031 term but also the institutional direction of a nation marked by a decade of instability with eight presidents. Voters faced a choice between two radically opposing proposals, that of progressive Roberto Sánchez and right-wing Keiko Fujimori.

This marks Fujimori’s fourth attempt at the presidency of Peru, having previously lost in second rounds in 2011 against Ollanta Humala, in 2016 to Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, and in 2021 to Pedro Castillo.

Sánchez, a psychologist and congressman, served as Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism during the 16 months of Pedro Castillo’s administration, from whom he claims to inherit his political legacy. Throughout the electoral campaign, he has championed the former president’s figure and promised to advocate for his release as well as a referendum to draft a new Constitution.

Allegations Against Fujimorism for Electoral Fraud Attempts

During the runoff on Sunday, allegations of a series of irregularities allegedly committed by Fujimorism with the intention of committing fraud were reported.

The National Jury of Elections (JNE) and the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) confirmed the detection of 90 previously marked ballots at various polling locations. According to the official report, authorities removed and voided the tampered materials, replacing them with new ballots. Additionally, two representatives from a political organization were arrested in Lima and handed over to the Prosecutor’s Office as part of immediate measures to ensure the integrity of the process.

Irregularities were reported beyond the capital as well. Journalist Karla Ramírez shared a video on her X account from the Hernán Vidaurre Reina Farje Sports Complex in La Molina, where the head of the polling station and voters reported marked ballots in favor of Keiko Fujimori, according to Caretas.pe.

Furthermore, the Ombudsman of Peru denounced an «attempt at fraud by trying to annul votes through the placement of marks on ballots before they are issued to the public.»
