Russia and China reaffirmed their commitment to defending Cuba against the threats and blockade imposed by the United States (U.S.).
During a meeting in Beijing on Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Chinese President Xi Jinping stressed that they will continue to support the Caribbean nation in the face of threats and coercive measures from the Trump administration, which maintains a blockade on the island.
The comprehensive sanctions—economic, commercial, and financial—imposed by Washington since 1962 have been reinforced by an executive order signed by Trump on January 29, which banned all oil imports to the island.
The Republican magnate justified this decision by claiming that Havana poses a threat to U.S. national security, allowing for tariffs on goods from countries supplying or selling oil to the island nation.
This measure has not only disrupted the daily lives of Cubans—with power outages lasting up to 20 hours a day—but has also jeopardized sensitive sectors like health, food supply, and the physical integrity of citizens.
In this context, Lavrov suggested that the U.S. should abandon colonial warfare policies and reiterated Moscow’s position to support Cuba’s sovereignty and self-determination, reminding that it was not Havana that rejected dialogue for years and that Washington has tried to foster a government change by «squeezing the Cuban economy«.
According to RT, the diplomat even offered advice to the Trump administration, stating that «when you disagree with a government, engage in dialogue with it«.
He further insisted that Moscow will continue to provide assistance to Havana.
“Of course, just like the People’s Republic of China, we support Cuba: politically, within the UN and in other forums, economically and humanitarianly […]. We will continue to provide such assistance […] I have no doubt,” he stated at a press conference from Beijing.
Lavrov recalled that, in an action that defied the blockade imposed by Trump, Russia recently sent crude oil to Cuba.
In late March, the Russian tanker Anatoli Kolodkin arrived on the island with approximately 100,000 tons of humanitarian oil .
The arrival of the Anatoli Kolodkin ended a three-month period during which Cuba had not received any oil shipments, part of the intensification of the U.S. blockade.
During the meeting, Xi Jinping called for establishing a stronger strategic coordination between China and Russia to strongly defend their legitimate interests and safeguard the unity of Global South countries, reported the Xinhua agency.
