Original article: Científicos rusos desarrollan método para verificar caducidad de los medicamentos sin abrir el envase
Researchers from the Department of Pharmaceutical and Toxicological Chemistry at the Patrice Lumumba Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (RUDN) discovered that medications containing nanoparticles emit distinct thermal signals based on their preservation state. The closer the expiration date, the lower the intensity of the thermal radiation emitted.
This signal can be detected using a portable device without the need to open the packaging, according to the university, a partner in the media network TV BRICS.
The rapid analysis method is based on a fundamental principle of physics: any substance whose temperature is above absolute zero emits thermal electromagnetic radiation.
The scientists confirmed that in the case of medications, the intensity of this radiation is directly related to their condition: the more degraded the product or the closer it is to the expiration date, the weaker the emitted signal.
«Every medication has an expiration date, and it is not just a formal requirement. An expired drug can not only lose its efficacy but also become dangerous, as its molecules degrade and can transform into unpredictable compounds,» explained Gleb Petrov, Associate Professor at the Department of Pharmaceutical and Toxicological Chemistry at RUDN.
The experiments were carried out over several years, evaluating the method on various biologically active pharmaceutical ingredients, including interferons, enzymes, and protein vaccines.
All measurements were taken through the closed packaging. As the biologically active components degraded and approached the expiration date, the intensity of the thermal signal decreased by approximately ten times, a variation accurately recorded by the portable detector.
According to the researchers, this technology will enable the identification of expired medications without compromising the integrity of the packaging and could become an additional tool to detect counterfeit pharmaceuticals.
According to RUDN, several major pharmaceutical companies have already incorporated the devices and methodology for use in their production lines.
