Leftist presidential candidate Roberto Sánchez has accused the electoral authorities of Peru of undermining the electoral process and the rules ahead of the upcoming runoff election, announcing plans to take action before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (CIDH), stating that «not even FIFA would dare to do this».

As three weeks have passed since the runoff held on June 7, the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) concluded the count of 100% of the ballots on Monday, revealing a virtually tied result. According to the ONPE, the far-right candidate Fujimori (Popular Force) secured 50.135% of valid votes, amounting to 9,223,396 votes, while Sánchez (Together for Peru) received 49.865% with 9,173,755 votes. This narrow margin of just 49,641 votes represents one of the closest differences recorded in Peruvian electoral history.

In light of this situation, Sánchez is firmly questioning the electoral process, insisting on highlighting various irregularities that may have compromised the integrity of the elections.

«We are convinced of the serious impact on the electoral process and the integrity of the electoral regulations as we changed the rules for the second round in elections conducted by consular offices,» he stated in a message posted on his social media account, confirming he would file a petition with the CIDH.

«We have the legal and legitimate right to approach this body,» he asserted.

In another message on X, he shared an excerpt from an interview he gave to RT, where he used a football match as an example, pointing out that «the rules of the game were changed» from the first to the second round.

He highlighted that while there was «an obligation to digitalize the minutes immediately after the election only for the consular offices,» this requirement was removed during the runoff.

«In the current World Cup, that is the case; a match is played with clear rules, both first and second halves. Here in Peru, that hasn’t occurred, and given such a close number of votes, we only realized, oh, what a surprise, the votes from Peruvians abroad were counted without using diplomatic pouches, the chain of custody wasn’t followed, and the obligation to digitalize the minutes was eliminated,» he accused.

He argued that these irregularities compromised the certainty of the legal security regarding the respect for voters’ will.

In fact, based on ONPE’s scrutiny, Sánchez won in Peruvian territory by 32,014 votes, while Fujimori was backed by votes from abroad.

«Only in Peru do we play «football» with two different sets of rules for the first and second halves; not even FIFA would dare to do this. This was done by ONPE, and the National Jury of Elections (JNE) protected it, stating there was no change in «normative procedure,» just in «operations.» We will appeal and take this to the CIDH,» asserted the leader of Together for Peru.
