Original article: Santiago: Obra «Verbalizar» vuelve a la cartelera teatral con funciones en Sala Agustín Siré
As part of the 2026 Season of the Theater Department at the University of Chile, the play «Verbalizar,» written and directed by Zarina Núñez Soto, is back on the theatrical schedule at the Sala Agustín Siré, with performances from Thursday to Saturday, between May 7 and May 16, at 7:30 PM.
This production unfolds during the birthday celebration of Catalina and her cousins, the González family, but what initially appears to be a typical party soon transforms into a setting where deep and painful truths emerge.
Through comedy and dark humor, the play offers a portrayal of this family aimed at sparking necessary conversations.
«Verbalizar» is Núñez Soto’s first dramatic text, born from an urgent need to write.
«It is crafted as a collage of personal experiences, friendships, and stories that resonate with many families in Chile. More than providing answers, this work aims to open conversations and provoke action among the audience,» explains the artist.
The idea to discuss these themes through the González family came from a place of relatability: a family like mine, like yours, like everyone’s,» adds the playwright and director, who emphasizes that «despite the distance provided by the actor’s language of comedy and humor, ‘Verbalizar’ also creates a space for us to see ourselves in these characters, reflect, and challenge ourselves on these themes that confront us as individuals, societies, and families.»
In this context, one of the challenges of this production was to find the balance between comedy and pain.
«As a directing team, our greatest challenge has been to embrace comedy in a context as painful and tense as child sexual abuse within a family. The initial phase of the project, which involved play and improvisation, greatly assisted us in developing not just the characters but the theme itself within the work. We navigated discomfort and exaggerated it to the extreme as a starting point,» asserts the director.
Throughout the creative process, Núñez drew inspiration from psychologist and activist Vinka Jackson, recognizing both her political advocacy and personal narrative.
Ultimately, the playwright and director highlights the significance of the theatrical experience as an act of communion and support: «I invite everyone to come to the theater, to see our play and all those you can. Watch theater and reflect on it, enjoy theater to escape the chaotic reality, even if only for a few minutes, and experience that fraction of time in communion.»

Tickets are priced at $8,800 for general admission, and $5,500 for students, individuals with disabilities, and seniors. Additional discounts are available on Ticketplus.cl.
This production is part of a project funded by the Performing Arts Fund, Call 2025 from the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage (MINCAP).
