Exploring critical issues of violence and contemporary perspectives on indigenous communities, KIMVNTeatro presents «Ütruf Tripay,» a thought-provoking play written and directed by Paula González Seguel. The production delves into a painful chapter of history, focusing on irregular adoptions of indigenous individuals during Chile’s military dictatorship, consequences of which are still felt today.
Countries like France, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Italy became destinations for many indigenous children who were abducted through a web of civil and institutional complicity, resulting in thousands of illegal adoptions during the military dictatorship supported by Chile’s right-wing political factions.
Paula González, the director, describes returning to these stories with the local audience—following its debut at the last Teatro a Mil International Festival—as «a gift.»
«It’s been around four years of work, where we have been refining our latest stage creation, which underscores our commitment as a company to human rights, the pursuit of justice, and the defense of children’s rights—the right to know who you are, where your identity lies, and your connection to the land,» the creative director asserted.
Regarding the production, Paula González noted, «It arises from a deep connection with the roots of the trees, which illuminated this creation and provided the messages to craft a story traversing various life passages of Alejandro; his childhood, adolescence, and return to Wallmapu. There, alongside Jeannette, a human rights lawyer, they seek the truth and uncover a network of institutions and individuals tied to illegal adoptions.»
Much of what is narrated in «Ütruf Tripay» stems from the personal experiences of these children, who, in the midst of denied languages and forgotten names, endeavor to reconstruct their stories and reclaim their sense of belonging, identity, and existence.
This aspect, the director explains, was built «thanks to the generosity of three key witnesses who have been integral to the creative process. These individuals are: Alejandro Quezada, a member of an international organization who has worked for years on reunions from Europe to Chile; Alina Namuncura, who was adopted in Germany; and Jeannette Velázquez, a member of the Sons and Mothers of Silence organization.»
«These three individuals have shared their experiences, and together with archival studies, news articles, and academic theses on illegal adoptions, a sensitive narrative has been constructed, which we hope will move the audience and support the visibility of a tremendous violation against children purely based on their poverty or indigenous status, denying them any right to retain their identities, territories, and sense of belonging,» emphasized the theatrical creator.
Moreover, KIMVNTeatro engaged in an interdisciplinary research and creation process, weaving together performing arts, music, documentary research, and audiovisual language to shape a theatrical spectacle that poetically navigates themes of memory, identity, hidden historical truths, and a profound desire for justice.
In the staging, one of the prominent languages utilized is music, as explained by Evelyn González Seguel, the musical director of the play and the company.
«Music operates as a narrative element that enhances the dramaturgy and sensory experience for the audience, contributing to the creation of atmospheres that directly interact with the scenic action and audiovisual language implemented in the production. It also provides emotional support to the interwoven and historiographical fabric present in the theatrical narrative,» detailed Evelyn González.
In the same vein, she adds, the sung music «is configured as an expressive language that amplifies the emotional weight of the characters and contributes to the creation of the dreamlike and symbolic universe present in the work.»

«Ütruf Tripay – Desarraigo» will be presented again in Chile at the Ana González Hall of Teatro UC (Jorge Washington 26, Ñuñoa).
Showtimes are from Thursday to Saturday, between June 4 and June 27, at 7:30 PM. Tickets are available through ticketplus.cl. More information about KIMVNTeatro can be found on their social media and their website.
