After attending the first Finance Committee session in the Senate on the «national reconstruction» project proposed by President Kast’s administration, Senator Fabiola Campillai reiterated her disagreement with the initiative, labeling it as «a flawed project for Chile.»
«The government’s rationale is completely nonsensical: they aim to collect less by lowering taxes for the wealthiest but simultaneously request to put the country in debt for $6.2 billion. How do they expect to pay back this debt?» the legislator questioned.
In this context, Campillai stated that «I demanded assurances from Minister Quiroz regarding employment, especially when the National Institute of Statistics (INE) tells us that 10 out of 100 women are unemployed. There were no answers.»
During the session, the senator also pressed the Finance Minister on «what concrete tax benefits this reform will provide us, given that the Independent Fiscal Council itself has warned that it offers no certainty, neither now nor in the future.»
«It seems they are only benefiting big businesses. The project proposes to reduce corporate tax from 27% to 23% and implement tax invariability for 25 years. Where is the evidence that this has ever worked?» Campillai added.
The legislator concluded by stating that the initiative «is a corporate lifeline for 25 years, which will also defund municipalities. It is a flawed project for Chile.»
