Following the announcement by the National Libertarian Party regarding a proposed law to pardon military personnel convicted of human rights violations during the October 2019 unrest, Senator Fabiola Campillai expressed her strong opposition to the initiative, stating that «wanting to pardon human rights criminals is a form of revenge.»
«I am not surprised by the stance of the National Libertarian Party regarding pardons, nor am I surprised by their admiration for human rights violators from both the past and present,» the legislator stated in a video shared on her social media platforms.
According to Campillai, implementing such benefits «contradicts the obligations of the Chilean state on the international level; it ignores the pain of the victims and undermines the work of justice. Wanting to pardon human rights criminals is a form of revenge. That is very different from what we seek and have achieved, which is, precisely, justice.»
«If the government pardons these criminals or the libertarians attempt to promote a bill in the same vein, they will be violating the rule of law and undermining the principles that any sovereign and democratic country should uphold,» emphasized the senator representing the Metropolitan Region.
