Original article: Senadora Cariola cuestionó aprobación de gigantesco proyecto inmobiliario en Maratué: «Se sigue cargando a Puchuncaví como zona de sacrificio»
Following the approval by the Ministerial Committee of the Maratué mega real estate project in Quirilluca, located in the Puchuncaví commune, Senator Karol Cariola (PC) condemned the decision and warned that the concerns of communities treated as a sacrifice zone for decades are being ignored.
«The Ministerial Committee’s approval of the mega project in Quirilluca is an irresponsible decision. The communities of Puchuncaví, which have suffered as a sacrifice zone for decades, are being overlooked. The housing deficit in the region will not be resolved by establishing a city in already saturated territories,» the senator stated.
This real estate initiative is owned by the brother-in-law of Andrónico Luksic and plans to construct a total of 14,180 homes over 45 years, with projections of 300 housing units built each year. At least 2,000 of these homes will belong to Serviu projects.
In this context, Senator Cariola expressed concern about the environmental impact that this project will have on the area: «This is a zone of unique environmental diversity that needs protection. It’s not just the project’s scale but its real impact on a fragile ecosystem and communities that have been demanding not to bear more environmental burden for years.»
Quirilluca is regarded as Puchuncaví’s last «green lung,» an area historically affected by industrial pollution. It also serves as a habitat for 8,000 migratory birds and other threatened species, such as the colo-colo cat, cururo, quique, chungungo, and various native lizards and snakes.
