Senator Karol Cariola (PC) expressed her concerns about the «lack of openness» shown by Finance Minister Jorge Quiroz during the Senate’s discussions on the «reconstruction» bill, commonly referred to as the major reform, proposed by the government of José A. Kast.

Initially, the legislator acknowledged the Senate presidency’s efforts in creating a collaborative space for dialogue between the government and the opposition to address the major reform prior to presenting amendments.

However, she noted, «This contrasts sharply with the willingness and openness displayed by Minister Quiroz, who has set absolutely non-negotiable boundaries within the discussion.»

«He specified which topics he was willing to discuss and which he was not. He indicated that, indeed, a reduction in corporate taxes, without any real fiscal compensation, is non-negotiable for them. Thus, what he presents does not alter the structure or the main intent of this project, which we believe is detrimental to the country,» Senator Cariola argued.

The PC lawmaker emphasized that «we have put forth our proposals and will continue to delve deeper into them, while also collaborating with other opposition forces to present some joint initiatives.»

«The minister has argued that the country needs to grow, and we all share that premise. However, thus far, the government’s approaches to growth have exhibited a completely opposite effect. He himself has stated that this measure does not guarantee economic growth; nevertheless, it jeopardizes social rights and evidently benefits the wealthy at the expense of the poorest,” Cariola warned.

Ultimately, the communist senator announced, «We are still working on some amendments aimed specifically at strengthening fiscal collection. (…) We will see how much real willingness the minister or the government has to consider the proposals put forth by the opposition,» she indicated.

Cariola’s stance was echoed by members of the United Senate Committee—comprising figures from the DC, PC, Frente Amplio, the Regionalist Green Social Federation, and Independents—who issued a public statement asserting that they «found no openness from the government on the core aspects of this bill.»
