Original article: “Al gobierno y a la derecha les da miedo aplicar medidas como levantar el secreto bancario a los narcos”: Senador Daniel Núñez

Senator Daniel Núñez (Communist Party) stated in an interview with El Siglo — published on June 7 by journalist Hugo Guzmán — that «the government and the right are afraid to implement measures like lifting banking secrecy on drug traffickers.» This assertion comes just days before a new Senate vote on legislation that would allow such tools in investigations against organized crime.
According to the senator, the ruling party’s position «allows for the ongoing infiltration of drug trafficking and organized crime into the financial system, particularly banks, to launder their money and thereby turn Chile into a paradise for criminals.» Núñez clarified to El Siglo that the proposal «is not a blanket authorization, but only for cases where findings and elements indicate the actions of a criminal structure.»
He sharply criticized the public security management of the administration led by José Antonio Kast: «The government is failing to fulfill its primary campaign promise to confront and resolve the public security crisis […] it is an enormous own goal that the people are paying for with continuous gunfire, kidnappings, murders, and insecurity in the neighborhoods.» Núñez also questioned why the Executive has «urgency in creating a vandal registry» but not in lifting banking secrecy from criminals.
On economic matters, Núñez warned that the right is «steamrolling» through to approve the mega tax reform. «Apparently, they have already bought the missing vote […] this makes them act with arrogance and overconfidence,» he remarked. Additionally, he expressed concern about the agreement between Chile and the United States for the exploitation of rare earth minerals, asserting that «Chile must act sovereignly.»
Finally, the senator criticized the appointment of Bernardo Fontaine as president of Codelco’s board, pointing out that he has always been in favor of privatizing everything related to the public sector.
