Original article: Sheinbaum responde a amenazas de Trump con hechos: homicidios caen 46% y 28 estados reducen niveles de violencia

Amid escalating diplomatic tensions with Donald Trump’s administration, Claudia Sheinbaum, the president of Mexico, revealed compelling data this week demonstrating a significant shift in national security strategy. The 46% decrease in intentional homicides from September 2024 to May 2026 stands out as a hallmark achievement of her administration, which prioritizes national sovereignty in response to external pressures.

During a recent press conference, Sheinbaum announced that May 2026 marked the lowest incidence of homicides in the past twelve years, with a daily average of 47.3 victims—a sharp drop from the 86.9 daily murders recorded in September, shortly after she took office in October 2024. This reduction signifies an average of 39 fewer homicides each day across Mexico.

Additionally, from January to May 2025, violent crime rates showed substantial declines, with kidnapping down by 32.1%, car theft with violence reduced by 23.4%, and violent robberies against transporters decreased by 25.7%. There was also a 16.5% reduction in general violent robberies, a 13.8% drop in violent business robberies, and a 9.3% decline in violent thefts against pedestrians.

Femicides have also decreased by 9.1%, a particularly significant figure in a country that has made women’s protection a core aspect of its security policies.

The deployment of the National Guard and inter-institutional coordination have been crucial to these advancements. With 120,000 troops under General Briseño’s command, the Security Cabinet has successfully implemented a strategy that combines territorial presence with operational intelligence. Since October 2024, 56,134 individuals linked to criminal activities have been arrested, including 57 priority targets.

28 States Experience Decrease in Crime Rates

The reduction in violence is not an isolated occurrence. 28 states across the country are showing downward trends in their crime rates, indicating that the pacification plan has a structural impact nationwide. San Luis Potosí leads this transformation with an 81% decline, followed by Zacatecas at 63% and Quintana Roo at 60.8%—regions that previously faced significant violence, as reported by TeleSUR.

Sovereignty Amid Trump’s Pressures

The release of these statistics comes in a complex geopolitical context, marked by pressures from the Trump administration and threats from U.S. security agencies to revoke visas for Mexican officials and bring criminal charges against governors. In this scenario, Sheinbaum’s government has responded with data and results, reaffirming that bilateral cooperation must be based on absolute respect for sovereignty.

Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch confirmed that the Sinaloa Cartel remains under strict state surveillance while law enforcement agencies conduct independent operations. Meetings of the Bilateral Implementation Group have addressed border security, migration, and arms trafficking based on principles of mutual responsibility, making it clear that Mexico will not accept any form of political subordination.

The presented results validate that Sheinbaum’s security strategy has systematically reduced violence and established a sovereign model of pacification that, while not abandoning international cooperation, charts its own course in security matters.
